Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ixgbe: do not configure xps for XDP queues netif_set_xps_queue() should not be called for an XDP Tx queue, since such queues are not netdev-exposed. On systems with number of CPUs >=64, on E610 adapter, netdev is configured with maximum number queue pairs being 63 (due to MSI-X assignment), but configuring XDP results in 64 XDP queues. So, during XDP program load, when netif_set_xps_queue() is called for the last XDP queue, we get a WARNING with a call trace and KASAN report afterwards (if enabled). Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves a misconfiguration where XPS (Transmit Packet Steering) is incorrectly set for XDP (eXpress Data Path) queues. XDP queues are not exposed to the network device, but on systems with 64 or more CPUs and E610 adapters, configuring XDP creates 64 queues while the network device supports only 63 queue pairs. This leads to a warning, call trace, and potential KASAN report when netif_set_xps_queue() is called for the last XDP queue.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability manifests as a WARNING and KASAN report during XDP program load on systems with CPUs >=64 and E610 adapter. Check kernel logs for messages like 'WARNING: net/core/dev.c:2854 at __netif_set_xps_queue' or 'BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in __netif_set_xps_queue'.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause system instability by triggering warnings, call traces, and KASAN reports during XDP program loading. It may lead to crashes or performance degradation on affected systems, particularly those with high CPU counts and E610 adapters.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it is a Linux kernel issue related to network queue configuration in the ixgbe driver. Compliance impacts would depend on system configuration and usage rather than the vulnerability itself.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the Linux kernel patch that skips XPS configuration for XDP Tx queues. Update to a kernel version containing the fix. If immediate patching is not possible, avoid using XDP programs on affected systems until patched.
