Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WP Project Manager WordPress plugin versions before 4.0.7. It involves Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) flaws in the plugin's REST API routes. Authenticated users, including those with the Subscriber role, can access or modify data from projects they do not belong to, such as reading task content and user email addresses or changing task boards.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the WP Project Manager plugin version is below 4.0.7. You can use WPScan with the command: wpscan --url <your-site-url> --enumerate vp,vt. Look for the plugin version and any reported vulnerabilities.

Impact Analysis

If you use the affected plugin, an attacker with basic user access could steal sensitive project data like task details and email addresses. They could also alter task boards in projects they are not part of, potentially disrupting workflows or causing data integrity issues.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations using the plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to exposed user information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Project Manager plugin to version 4.0.7 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin until an update is applied. Review user roles and permissions to ensure least privilege access.
