Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw in SourceCodester Class and Exam Timetabling System 1.0. It exists in the file /BSHRM1.php where manipulation of the 'course' argument allows an attacker to inject malicious scripts. The exploit is publicly available, increasing the risk of attacks.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this XSS vulnerability requires checking for improper input validation in the /BSHRM1.php file. Inspect web server logs for unusual requests containing script tags or payloads targeting the 'course' parameter. Use tools like Burp Suite or OWASP ZAP to fuzz the parameter for XSS vectors.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute malicious scripts in your browser, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting to phishing sites, or performing actions on your behalf. Since the exploit is public, the risk of real-world attacks is higher.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks due to improper input validation in the /BSHRM1.php file. While it does not directly impact data confidentiality or integrity, XSS vulnerabilities can be exploited to steal session cookies or sensitive data, which may violate GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (patient data privacy) compliance if exploited in systems handling such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately patch the application by updating to the latest version or applying a vendor-supplied fix. Implement input validation for the 'course' parameter in /BSHRM1.php to reject script tags. Use a web application firewall to block XSS payloads. Monitor logs for exploitation attempts.
