Information Disclosure in Splunk Enterprise via REST API

Description

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user that holds a role with the rest_properties_get capability could read encrypted stored credentials through the Representational State Transfer (REST) API. Successful exploitation can expose relevant data protected by the stored credentials. The incorrect permission assignment is possible because the properties REST endpoint requires the rest_properties_get capability instead of the list_storage_passwords capability to read stored credentials. For more information see Define roles on the Splunk platform with capabilities (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.4/manage-splunk-platform-users-and-roles/define-roles-on-the-splunk-platform-with-capabilities) in the Splunk documentation.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14. A user with a role holding the rest_properties_get capability can read encrypted stored credentials via the REST API. The issue occurs because the properties endpoint requires rest_properties_get instead of list_storage_passwords to access credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 using commands like 'splunk version' or checking the Splunk installation directory. Review user roles with 'rest_properties_get' capability via '| rest /services/authorization/roles' in Splunk search.

Impact Analysis

Exploitation could expose sensitive data protected by the stored credentials. Attackers with access to the REST API could retrieve encrypted credentials, potentially leading to unauthorized access to other systems or data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. Exposure of stored credentials may result in data breaches, triggering regulatory penalties and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to versions 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 or later. Remove 'rest_properties_get' capability from roles that do not require it. Audit roles with '| rest /services/authorization/roles' and adjust permissions accordingly.
