Description

In Splunk SOAR versions below 8.6.0, a user who holds a role that contains the playbooks:view permission could view metadata about a playbook repository that they are not authorized to view. The vulnerability is possible because Playbook History does not check repository permissions before returning playbook revision metadata. Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Splunk SOAR versions below 8.6.0. A user with a role containing the playbooks:view permission can view metadata about playbook repositories they are not authorized to access. The issue occurs because Playbook History does not verify repository permissions before returning playbook revision metadata.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves unauthorized access to playbook repository metadata due to insufficient permission checks in Splunk SOAR versions below 8.6.0. To detect it, review user roles with playbooks:view permission and check for unusual access to restricted playbook repositories. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with limited privileges could gain unauthorized access to sensitive playbook metadata, potentially exposing information about restricted playbooks or repositories. This could lead to information leakage or further exploitation if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may violate compliance requirements that mandate strict access controls and data protection, such as GDPR or HIPAA. Unauthorized access to metadata could result in data breaches, leading to potential fines or penalties for non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Splunk SOAR to version 8.6.0 or later to address the permission check flaw. Review and restrict roles with playbooks:view permission to only necessary users. Monitor playbook repository access logs for unauthorized attempts.
