Executive Summary

The User Profile Builder WordPress plugin before version 4.0.1 has a vulnerability where it does not properly validate the type of data being deserialized during the import of configuration files. This allows high privilege users like administrators to perform PHP Object Injection attacks.

Detection Guidance

Check if the User Profile Builder WordPress plugin version is prior to 4.0.1. Inspect configuration file imports for improper deserialization attempts. Look for unusual PHP Object Injection patterns in logs or network traffic.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers with high privileges, such as administrators, to inject malicious PHP objects. Further exploitation requires a suitable gadget from another installed plugin or theme, as no direct POP chain exists in the User Profile Builder plugin itself.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the User Profile Builder plugin to version 4.0.1 or later. Disable the free add-on feature if not in use. Monitor for suspicious activity from high-privilege users.
