Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a command injection flaw in TRENDnet TEW-821DAP version 2.2.01b05. It exists in the /cgi-bin/ping.cgi file's ssi component. An attacker can manipulate the ipaddr argument to inject and execute arbitrary commands on the device remotely.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, scan for the presence of TRENDnet TEW-821DAP devices running firmware version 2.2.01b05. Check if the /cgi-bin/ping.cgi endpoint is accessible and test for command injection by sending crafted input to the ipaddr parameter. Use network scanners like Nmap to identify vulnerable devices.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to the device, execute malicious commands, potentially steal data, or disrupt device operations. Since it's remotely exploitable, users of affected devices are at risk without direct interaction.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote command injection via manipulation of the ipaddr argument in the ping.cgi component. Such unauthorized remote execution could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or exfiltration, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the TRENDnet TEW-821DAP firmware to the latest version. Disable remote access to the /cgi-bin/ping.cgi endpoint if possible. Implement network segmentation to isolate vulnerable devices. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity targeting this endpoint.
