Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in the Firebase Authentication WordPress plugin before version 1.7.1. It allows unauthenticated attackers to log in as any user, including administrators, by exploiting unverified email claims in Firebase tokens. The plugin fails to check if the email address in the token is verified before matching it to a WordPress account and issuing a session.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the Firebase Authentication WordPress plugin. If it is below 1.7.1, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files directly to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to gain unauthorized access to any WordPress account, including admin accounts, without needing credentials. Attackers could take over websites, steal data, or perform malicious actions. Users of the plugin prior to version 1.7.1 are at risk until they update.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized data processing, or loss of control over personal data, potentially leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Firebase Authentication WordPress plugin to version 1.7.1 or later immediately to patch the vulnerability. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is not immediately available.
