Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a capability bypass in the Content Mask WordPress plugin versions 1.8.0 to 1.8.5.4. It allows users with the Contributor role, which normally cannot publish posts or pages, to publish content directly due to the plugin not checking the required publish capability.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Content Mask plugin using WordPress admin panel or via command line. Compare it against version 1.8.5.5. Look for unauthorized posts or pages published by Contributor-level users.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Contributor-level access could publish unauthorized posts or pages on your WordPress site. This could lead to defacement, spreading misinformation, or other malicious activities without needing higher privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthorized users to publish content, which could lead to unauthorized data exposure or modification. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data integrity and confidentiality) and HIPAA (access controls and integrity of protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Content Mask plugin to version 1.8.5.5 or later immediately. Review user roles and posts to identify any unauthorized content published by Contributors. Consider temporarily disabling the plugin until updated.
