Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows a logged-in user to escalate their own privileges by assigning themselves to arbitrary frontend user groups through the profile edit plugin's default field configuration. The extension fails to properly restrict which groups can be selected during self-service account edits.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the femanager extension is installed and its version is below the patched versions (6.4.5, 7.5.5, 8.4.2, or 13.3.5). Inspect the frontend user group assignment logic in the profile edit plugin for improper restrictions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with basic access could gain elevated permissions without needing additional credentials. This could allow unauthorized access to sensitive features or data restricted to higher-privilege groups.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating principles of least privilege and data protection requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Review and restrict usergroup assignment permissions in the profile edit plugin configuration. Disable self-service group assignment if not required. Update to a patched version if available.
