Description

Missing minimum size validation in secure context allocation in FreeRTOS-Kernel before 11.3.1 might allow local users to corrupt secure-world heap metadata via an out-of-bounds write with an undersized stack size parameter.Β To remediate this issue, users should upgrade to versionΒ 11.3.1 or later.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves a missing size validation in secure context allocation in FreeRTOS-Kernel versions before 11.3.1. It allows local users to corrupt secure-world heap metadata by providing an undersized stack size parameter, leading to an out-of-bounds write.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to FreeRTOS-Kernel versions before 11.3.1 and involves heap metadata corruption due to undersized stack size parameters. Detection requires checking the FreeRTOS-Kernel version in use and inspecting secure context allocation code for missing size validation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with local access could exploit this to corrupt heap metadata, potentially causing crashes, data corruption, or unauthorized code execution in the secure world of a FreeRTOS system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR or HIPAA by allowing unauthorized local users to corrupt secure-world heap metadata. Such corruption might lead to data integrity issues or unauthorized access, which are critical concerns under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRTOS-Kernel to version 11.3.1 or later to address the missing minimum size validation in secure context allocation.
