Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a privileged remote code execution flaw in the Joomla Event Manager extension versions before 5.0.1. It allows an administrator to upload dangerous file types including PHP files through the administrator source model, which can lead to remote code execution on the server.

Detection Guidance

Check if Joomla Event Manager versions below 5.0.1 are installed. Look for unauthorized PHP files in web directories. Review administrator access logs for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrator access could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on the server, potentially taking full control of the system, stealing data, or disrupting services. Even without direct access, if an attacker gains admin privileges through other means, this vulnerability could be used.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Joomla Event Manager to version 5.0.1 or later. Remove any unknown PHP files in web directories. Restrict administrator access to trusted users only.
