CWE ID Description
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-1284 The product receives input that is expected to specify a quantity (such as size or length), but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the quantity has the required properties.
CWE-121 A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function).

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-78010 is a stack-based buffer overflow in WatchGuard Fireware OS's iked process. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit it by sending specially crafted network traffic to trigger a buffer overflow, causing a Denial of Service (DoS) in VPN processing. The iked process crashes and restarts, disrupting VPN services.

Detection Guidance

Monitor VPN service logs for iked process crashes or restarts. Check for unusual network traffic patterns targeting VPN ports. Use network monitoring tools to detect malformed IKEv2 packets.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can disrupt VPN services by causing the iked process to crash and restart, leading to temporary loss of VPN connectivity. While remote code execution is unlikely, stack corruption could occur, potentially affecting system stability.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Fireware OS to versions 2026.2.2, 12.12.2, or 12.5.20 or later. Block or restrict IKEv2 traffic from untrusted sources until patched. Monitor VPN services for stability and performance issues.
