Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in WatchGuard Dimension's task scheduling feature. A low-privileged authenticated administrator can inject malicious HTML or JavaScript into task fields. When other users view the task listing page, the injected script executes in their browser session.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WatchGuard Dimension task scheduling fields for suspicious HTML/JavaScript code in task names or descriptions. Check if inputs are properly sanitized and verify the software version is below 2.3.1. Monitor browser console logs for unexpected script execution when viewing task listings.

Impact Analysis

Exploitation could lead to session cookie or token theft, unauthorized actions performed on behalf of victims, UI manipulation, and further persistent attacks. This may result in privilege escalation and broader administrative compromise of the Dimension system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data through session hijacking or manipulation of UI elements. Exploitation may lead to unauthorized actions or data theft, which violates confidentiality and integrity requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade WatchGuard Dimension to version 2.3.1 or later. If upgrading is not possible, disable the task scheduling feature or restrict access to low-privileged administrators. Implement input validation and output encoding for all task fields to prevent XSS payloads.
