Executive Summary

This is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in WatchGuard Dimension's Email Server Test configuration. An authenticated privileged attacker can use the Dimension application server as a proxy to enumerate exposed network services on adjacent network systems. This bypasses network segmentation controls, allowing internal network reconnaissance such as mapping internal hosts and open ports from the Dimension host's perspective.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SSRF vulnerability, monitor network traffic from the WatchGuard Dimension server for unusual outbound requests to internal or adjacent network services. Check logs for repeated requests to internal IP ranges or services not typically accessed by the Dimension application. Use network scanning tools like nmap to verify if the Dimension server is making unexpected connections to internal hosts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows an attacker to map internal network hosts and open ports, which can help them plan lateral movement within the network and identify vulnerable internal services for further exploitation. It bypasses network segmentation controls, potentially exposing internal systems to reconnaissance and attack.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update WatchGuard Dimension to version 2.3.1 or later to patch the vulnerability. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict network access for the Dimension server by implementing strict firewall rules to block outbound connections to internal networks. Disable the Email Server Test configuration feature if not in use.
