CWE ID Description
CWE-918 The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination.
CWE-208 Two separate operations in a product require different amounts of time to complete, in a way that is observable to an actor and reveals security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not.

Executive Summary

This is a blind server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in WatchGuard Dimension Database Server Test configuration. An authenticated privileged attacker can misuse the database connection test feature to probe internal network hosts and infer reachability based on response timing. This allows internal network mapping and discovery of reachable services and IP ranges.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unusual database connection test requests originating from WatchGuard Dimension servers. Check for timing discrepancies in responses when probing internal hosts. Review logs for authenticated administrator actions involving the database test feature targeting internal IP ranges.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could use this to map your internal network, identify reachable services, and discover infrastructure details that should be hidden. This could lead to further attacks like data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized network reconnaissance. An attacker could map internal network services and infrastructure, which may expose sensitive data or systems that should be isolated. GDPR requires protecting personal data and ensuring network security, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. Unauthorized network mapping could violate these requirements by revealing internal systems or enabling further attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade WatchGuard Dimension to version 2.3.1 or later to patch the vulnerability. Disable the database connection test feature if not required. Restrict administrative access to only necessary users and monitor for suspicious activity involving internal network probing.
