Executive Summary

The Shuffle theme for WordPress has a Local File Inclusion vulnerability in versions up to 1.8. This allows unauthenticated attackers to include and execute arbitrary files on the server, enabling PHP code execution. Attackers can bypass access controls, steal sensitive data, or run malicious code if they can upload files like images.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Shuffle theme version 1.8 or lower. Inspect server logs for unusual file inclusion attempts or PHP execution from unexpected paths. Use tools like grep to search for vulnerable theme files or patterns in web server access logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized access to your server, data theft, or complete system compromise. Attackers could execute malicious PHP code, steal sensitive information, or take control of your WordPress site. It may also allow lateral movement within your network if the server has broader access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can violate compliance requirements like GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data security) by exposing sensitive data or allowing unauthorized access. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage if such breaches occur due to unpatched vulnerabilities.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the Shuffle theme to the latest version immediately to patch the Local File Inclusion vulnerability.
  • Disable file uploads or restrict upload directories to prevent arbitrary file execution.
  • Review server file permissions to limit access to sensitive files and directories.
  • Monitor server logs for signs of exploitation or unauthorized access attempts.
