CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an authenticated SQL injection vulnerability in WatchGuard Dimension's log viewer feature. An attacker with report administration permissions can send specially crafted requests to inject and execute arbitrary SQL statements against the PostgreSQL-backed logging database. This could lead to data disclosure, modification, or further compromise of the logging backend.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check WatchGuard Dimension versions between 2.0 and 2.3.0. Verify if the log viewer feature is accessible to users with report administration permissions. Monitor PostgreSQL logs for unusual SQL queries or errors indicating injection attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this flaw to gain arbitrary command execution as the Dimension WebUI process user. This may result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, data manipulation, or further compromise of the system's logging infrastructure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA. Organizations using affected versions may face regulatory penalties or data breach notifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade WatchGuard Dimension to version 2.3.1 or later immediately. Remove report administration permissions from untrusted users until the upgrade is complete. Review PostgreSQL user permissions to restrict access to the logging database.
