Executive Summary

This is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in WatchGuard Dimension's report detail page. It allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in an authenticated user's browser by tricking them into clicking a specially crafted URL. The attack requires the victim to be authenticated and have report-viewing permissions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for suspicious URLs containing XSS payloads targeting WatchGuard Dimension's report detail page. Check for authenticated users accessing report pages with unusual parameters. Review server logs for requests to /report-detail or similar endpoints with script tags or event handlers in query strings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to perform same-origin actions, read page data, or chain with other weaknesses like CSRF. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information or actions on behalf of the victim.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized data access or modification. Attackers could exploit it to steal sensitive user data or session tokens, which may violate data protection requirements under these regulations. The vulnerability allows same-origin actions and page data reading, increasing exposure of protected information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade WatchGuard Dimension to version 2.3.1 or later. Disable report-viewing permissions for non-essential users until patched. Implement network-level protections to block malicious URLs. Monitor for unusual authenticated sessions accessing report pages.
