CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in Chromecast within Google Chrome versions before 152.0.7977.65. A use-after-free occurs when a program continues to use a pointer after freeing the memory it points to. In this case, a remote attacker who had already compromised the renderer process could exploit this to execute arbitrary code outside the sandbox by tricking a user into visiting a specially crafted HTML page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 152.0.7977.65. Detection involves checking the installed Chrome version. On Windows, run: wmic product where "name like 'Google Chrome'" get version. On Linux, run: google-chrome --version. If the version is below 152.0.7977.65, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you are using an affected version of Google Chrome, this vulnerability could allow an attacker who has already gained control of the renderer process to escape the sandbox and execute malicious code on your system. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or installation of malware. Updating to the latest version of Chrome patches this issue.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other standards as it is a technical flaw in Chromecast functionality within Google Chrome. Compliance impacts would depend on how the vulnerability is exploited in a specific environment, but no direct regulatory implications are mentioned in the provided context.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 152.0.7977.65 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in Chromecast.
