Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in Netron versions 9.1.2 or earlier. It occurs in the desktop application when node names are not properly sanitized, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts. These scripts can hide certain nodes, perform port scanning, or exploit a Chrome n-day vulnerability to achieve Remote Code Execution.

Detection Guidance

Since this is a reflected XSS vulnerability in the Netron desktop application, detection would require inspecting network traffic or application behavior when handling node names. Check for unsanitized inputs in node names and monitor for suspicious activity like hidden nodes or port scanning attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your system, potentially gaining control over your machine. It may also allow them to hide malicious nodes in the application, perform unauthorized network scans, or bypass security measures to run further attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Netron to the latest version (>=9.1.3) to patch the XSS vulnerability. If an update is unavailable, avoid using untrusted node names and disable network access for the application until patched.
