Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: sco: Fix a race condition in sco_sock_timeout() sco_sock_timeout() runs asynchronously and lock_sock(sk). If the socket is closing while the timer is running, it holds the same lock (lock_sock(sk)) twice, leading to a deadlock. Executive Summary

This is a race condition in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth SCO (Synchronous Connection-Oriented) socket implementation. The issue occurs in sco_sock_timeout() which runs asynchronously and attempts to acquire a socket lock (lock_sock(sk)) while the socket is closing. This can lead to a deadlock when the same lock is held twice during concurrent operations.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's Bluetooth SCO (Synchronous Connection-Oriented) socket implementation. Detection requires checking kernel logs for lockdep warnings or deadlocks related to Bluetooth SCO operations. Monitor system logs for messages about circular locking dependencies in the Bluetooth subsystem.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could cause system hangs or crashes on Linux systems using Bluetooth SCO connections. It may lead to denial-of-service conditions where affected systems become unresponsive or require rebooting.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a kernel deadlock in Bluetooth SCO sockets, leading to system instability or crashes. While not directly violating GDPR or HIPAA, such instability could disrupt data processing systems handling personal or health data, potentially causing compliance issues if critical services fail.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the kernel patch that moves disable_delayed_work_sync() outside of lock_sock(sk) in the sco_sock_timeout() function. Update to a Linux kernel version that includes this fix. If immediate patching is not possible, disable Bluetooth SCO functionality as a temporary workaround.
