Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack buffer overflow flaw in certain Greenbone products. A remote attacker with user privileges can exploit a malicious or compromised NASL vulnerability test (VT) to trigger the overflow and gain full system access on the affected device.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Greenbone OS version is between 5.0 and 25.0.5 or if your openvas-scanner version is between 3.0 and 23.49.3. Run 'greenbone-osc --version' or 'openvas-scanner --version' to verify versions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your system, potentially leading to complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and services running on the affected device.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information security) due to potential exposure of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Greenbone OS to version 25.0.6 or later and update openvas-scanner to version 23.49.4 or later. Remove any untrusted or malicious VT scripts from your scanner.
