Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper access control issue in Doccano Open Source Annotation Tools up to version 1.8.5. It affects the Project Example Detail Endpoint, specifically the ExampleDetail function in the /v1/projects/1/examples/ path. The flaw allows remote attackers to manipulate access controls, potentially leading to unauthorized actions.

Detection Guidance

Check Doccano versions up to 1.8.5 for the Project Example Detail Endpoint at /v1/projects/1/examples/. Look for improper access control issues in the ExampleDetail function. Monitor for unauthorized remote access attempts or unusual activity in project example endpoints.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability may allow remote attackers to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data or perform actions they shouldn't. Since the exploit is publicly available, the risk of misuse is higher. Users of affected Doccano versions should update immediately to avoid potential breaches.

Compliance Impact

Improper access controls can lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations using vulnerable Doccano versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, or reputational damage if sensitive data is compromised.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Doccano to a version beyond 1.8.5 where the vulnerability is patched. If no patch is available, restrict network access to the Project Example Detail Endpoint (/v1/projects/1/examples/) and review access controls for improper access issues.
