Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper access control flaw in Doccano Open Source Annotation Tools up to version 1.8.5. It affects the LabelList function in the Bulk-Delete Endpoint, specifically in the /v1/projects/1/category-types component. The issue allows remote attackers to manipulate the system due to weak access controls.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Doccano versions up to 1.8.5, specifically the Bulk-Delete Endpoint in the LabelList function. To detect it, check if your Doccano instance is running a vulnerable version (1.8.5 or earlier). Inspect network traffic for unauthorized access attempts to the /v1/projects/1/category-types endpoint. Look for unusual bulk-delete operations or improper access control bypasses in logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow unauthorized users to delete or modify labeled data in Doccano. Since it affects annotation tools used in machine learning pipelines, attackers might alter training datasets, leading to incorrect model outputs or data corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability involves improper access controls in Doccano up to 1.8.5, allowing unauthorized manipulation of data via the Bulk-Delete Endpoint. Such flaws could lead to unauthorized access or deletion of sensitive data, which may violate GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Doccano to a version beyond 1.8.5 where the vulnerability is patched. If no patch exists, consider disabling the Bulk-Delete Endpoint in the /v1/projects/1/category-types component until a fix is available.
