Executive Summary

OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1 have an authorization bypass flaw in skill tool dispatch. Non-owner users with permission to invoke skill commands can access owner-only tools and server credentials due to missing sender owner status verification.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1 by running version check commands like 'openclaw --version' or inspecting installed package versions. Audit skill tool dispatch configurations to verify if non-owner senders can access owner-only tools. Review logs for unauthorized access attempts to owner-restricted tools or server credentials.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthorized access to sensitive owner-only tools and server credentials. Attackers could exploit it to escalate privileges, steal data, or gain control over affected systems if they have basic skill command permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if owner-only tools handle regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade OpenClaw to version 2026.8.1 or later to patch the vulnerability.
  • Disable skill tool dispatch for non-owner senders before upgrading.
  • Audit installed skills that map commands to owner-only tools to identify potential exposure.
