Description

OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1 contain a sandbox policy bypass vulnerability in the MCP loopback component that allows sandboxed coding-agent sessions to invoke tools explicitly denied by sandbox.tools.deny policy. Attackers can list and invoke denied tools to access data or perform actions the operator intended to exclude from the sandbox.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a sandbox policy bypass in OpenClaw versions before 2026.8.1. It affects the MCP loopback component, allowing sandboxed coding-agent sessions to invoke tools that should be blocked by the sandbox.tools.deny policy. Attackers can list and execute denied tools, potentially accessing restricted data or performing unintended actions within the sandbox.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the OpenClaw version installed on your system. If it is before 2026.8.1, the system is vulnerable. Run 'openclaw --version' or check package managers like 'apt list --installed | grep openclaw' or 'pip show openclaw'.

Impact Analysis

The impact depends on the denied tools accessed. Attackers could gain access to restricted data or perform actions the operator intended to exclude from the sandbox. This requires local access and has limited impact due to low attack complexity, but could still lead to data breaches or unauthorized actions if sensitive tools are involved.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized access to restricted data within sandboxed environments. If denied tools include data processing or storage functions, attackers might bypass intended restrictions, leading to unauthorized data exposure or processing. This violates principles of least privilege and data protection required by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade OpenClaw to version 2026.8.1 or later to patch the vulnerability.
  • Disable MCP loopback for sandboxed coding-agent sessions if upgrading is not immediately possible.
  • Remove sensitive tools from the Gateway inventory to reduce potential impact.
