Privilege Escalation in OpenClaw via MCP Configuration Manipulation

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-100596, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-09-26

Last updated on: 2026-09-26

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

OpenClaw versions before 2026.7.1 fail to properly authorize non-owner users executing MCP configuration changes through /mcp set and /mcp unset commands. Attackers can persist arbitrary stdio MCP commands that execute with OpenClaw process privileges when configuration loads, compromising host confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Executive Summary

OpenClaw versions before 2026.7.1 do not properly authorize non-owner users when they attempt to execute MCP configuration changes via /mcp set and /mcp unset commands. This allows attackers to insert malicious stdio MCP commands that run with OpenClaw process privileges when the configuration loads, leading to potential system compromise.

Detection Guidance

Check OpenClaw version with command: openclaw --version. If version is before 2026.7.1, the system is vulnerable. Inspect MCP configuration files for unauthorized /mcp set or /mcp unset commands. Monitor logs for unexpected MCP command executions or privilege escalations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the OpenClaw process. This may result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, modification or deletion of files, installation of malware, or disruption of services running on the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or disclosure of personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of compliance certifications if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenClaw to version 2026.7.1 or later to address the authorization flaw in MCP configuration changes.
