Description

In AzuraCast before 0.23.8, the public On-Demand download endpoint fails to verify playlist-level access controls, allowing unauthenticated users to download media files excluded from On-Demand-enabled playlists. Attackers can bypass the station operator's intended access restrictions by directly requesting media via the download endpoint using valid media identifiers, exposing private or restricted audio content.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in AzuraCast before version 0.23.8 involves an authorization bypass in the public On-Demand download endpoint. The endpoint fails to verify if a requested media file belongs to an enabled On-Demand playlist, allowing unauthenticated users to download restricted media by using valid media identifiers. This bypasses the station operator's intended access controls.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unauthorized access to the On-Demand download endpoint in AzuraCast. Check logs for direct media file requests using valid identifiers without proper authentication. Inspect HTTP requests to paths like /api/on-demand/download/{media_id} for unauthenticated access attempts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can exploit this to download private, licensed, or unreleased audio content that was meant to be restricted. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive media, copyright infringement, or exposure of proprietary content. The impact includes potential data breaches and loss of control over media distribution.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with data protection regulations like GDPR or HIPAA if it results in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data stored in media files. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to data exposure.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade AzuraCast to version 0.23.8 or later to patch the vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the On-Demand download endpoint by implementing IP whitelisting or firewall rules. Review and audit media file access logs for any signs of exploitation.
