Description

A security flaw has been discovered in amirsanni Mini-Inventory-and-Sales-Management-System up to 81bf0b55f5933f3b0dbb1583204a612e06605b95. The impacted element is the function order_by of the file DB_query_builder.php of the component Database Query Builder. Performing a manipulation of the argument orderBy results in sql injection. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. The exploit has been released to the public and may be used for attacks. This product follows a rolling release approach for continuous delivery, so version details for affected or updated releases are not provided. The project maintainer confirms: "I stopped maintaining that project for a while now, so I'm not sure it's worth fixing." This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authenticated blind SQL injection flaw in the Mini-Inventory-and-Sales-Management-System. It exists in three endpoints due to improper handling of the orderBy GET parameter. The application fails to escape column names containing parentheses, allowing attackers to inject malicious SQL queries through the order_by() function in CodeIgniter. The root cause is in system/database/DB_query_builder.php where input sanitization fails when parentheses are present.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor HTTP responses for inconsistent status codes (200 vs 500) when manipulating the orderBy parameter. Test with payloads like orderBy=id) AND 1=1-- and orderBy=id) AND 1=2-- to observe differences in responses. Check application logs for database errors or unusual queries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from the database, modify or delete data, or gain unauthorized access to the system. Since the exploit is publicly available and the project is no longer maintained, the risk of active exploitation is higher. The vulnerability requires authentication but the demo account provides easy access for testing exploitation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations using this unsupported system would face compliance violations, potential data breaches, and regulatory penalties due to inadequate security controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately disable the affected application if possible. Apply input validation to sanitize the orderBy parameter. Upgrade to a supported version of CodeIgniter or replace the vulnerable DB_query_builder.php component. Since the project is unmaintained, consider migrating to an alternative system.
