Description

A weakness has been identified in Trusted Domain Project OpenDKIM up to 2.11.0. This affects the function dkim_canon_selecthdrs of the file libopendkim/dkim-canon.c of the component DKIM Signature Header Selection. Executing a manipulation of the argument h can lead to out-of-bounds write. The attack can be executed remotely. The exploit has been made available to the public and could be used for attacks. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way.

CWE ID Description
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-100888 is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in OpenDKIM affecting the dkim_canon_selecthdrs function. It occurs when processing a DKIM-Signature header with a crafted h= tag. The function allocates memory based on message headers but writes data beyond allocated bounds when the h= tag lists more headers than the message contains, causing memory corruption and crashes.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor OpenDKIM logs for crashes or errors during DKIM-Signature header processing. Use AddressSanitizer or similar tools to detect heap-buffer-overflow writes when processing crafted h= tags. Check for unusual memory corruption patterns in OpenDKIM processes.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can be exploited remotely without authentication by sending a specially crafted email. It causes memory corruption leading to crashes and denial of service. While not directly enabling code execution due to the nature of the overflow, the impact depends on system memory layout and could potentially disrupt email services using OpenDKIM.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update OpenDKIM to the latest patched version. If patching is not possible, apply a temporary fix by adding bounds checking in the dkim_canon_selecthdrs function before writing to the lhdrs array. Disable inbound DKIM verification temporarily if the risk is high.
