Path Traversal in oc-mirror Operator Catalog Extraction

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-101295, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Path traversal / arbitrary file write in oc-mirror's operator catalog image extraction. When mirroring operator catalogs using either the legacy v1 path (--v1) or the OCI feature path (--use-oci-feature), oc-mirror extracts tar entries from catalog image layers without validating that file paths resolve within the intended destination directory.

Executive Summary

This is a path traversal and arbitrary file write vulnerability in the oc-mirror tool. When mirroring operator catalogs using either the legacy v1 path or the OCI feature path, oc-mirror extracts tar entries from catalog image layers without validating file paths. This allows malicious catalog images to write arbitrary files on the administrator's workstation with the privileges of the oc-mirror process.

Detection Guidance

Check for unexpected file writes in directories where oc-mirror extracts catalog images. Monitor logs for path traversal attempts during oc-mirror operations using --v1 or --use-oci-feature flags. Inspect file permissions and ownership changes in system directories after running oc-mirror.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized code execution, file modification, or denial of service on your system. Attackers could exploit it to write malicious files, potentially gaining control over your workstation or disrupting operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized file writes on the administrator's workstation, potentially exposing or modifying sensitive data. This may violate GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if such data is involved.

Mitigation Strategies

Stop using oc-mirror with --v1 or --use-oci-feature flags until patched. Review file system for unauthorized changes. Apply Red Hat security updates when available. Restrict oc-mirror execution to trusted catalogs only.
