Description

Improper link resolution (CWE-59 / CWE-22) in the allowedLocalRoots path validation in Google MCP Toolbox for Databases versions 1.2.0 through 1.9.0 allows a remote authenticated attacker with tool execution permissions to bypass directory boundary restrictions via symbolic links. Because path validation checks directories lexically without resolving symbolic links first, an attacker can access or overwrite arbitrary local files located outside the permitted root directories.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.
CWE-59 The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper handling of symbolic links in Google MCP Toolbox for Databases versions 1.2.0 through 1.9.0. The system checks paths without resolving symbolic links first, allowing attackers to bypass directory restrictions by using symlinks to access or modify files outside permitted directories.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with tool execution permissions could exploit this to read sensitive files outside allowed directories or overwrite arbitrary local files. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or system compromise depending on the files accessed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to exposed protected health or personal information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Google MCP Toolbox for Databases to a version beyond 1.9.0 where the fix for CVE-2026-102242 has been applied. The fix resolves symbolic links during path validation to prevent bypassing directory restrictions.
