Description

Electron is a framework for writing cross-platform desktop applications using JavaScript, HTML and CSS. From 42.3.3 until 42.10.0, 43.5.0, and 44.0.0-beta.6, Electron's sandboxed preload code cache did not verify that a cached entry matched the preload it was served for. A compromised renderer could write attacker-controlled cache data and cause Electron to reuse it for a later load, executing the renderer's code in the more privileged preload context. The issue affects applications that load untrusted content. This issue is fixed in versions 42.10.0, 43.5.0, and 44.0.0-beta.6.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Electron versions between 42.3.3 and 42.9.0, 43.0.0-beta.1 and 43.4.1, and 44.0.0-alpha.1 and 44.0.0-beta.5. It involves the cache Electron uses for sandboxed preload scripts not verifying that a cached entry matches the intended preload script. A compromised renderer could exploit this to execute arbitrary code in the preload context during subsequent loads.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves checking Electron versions and monitoring for suspicious preload cache behavior. Use commands like 'electron --version' to verify installed versions. Check for applications loading untrusted content. Monitor renderer processes for unexpected cache writes or reused preload scripts. No direct detection commands are provided in the resources.

Impact Analysis

If you use an affected Electron version and load untrusted content, a compromised renderer could write attacker-controlled cache data. This cache could later be reused for a different load, executing the attacker's code in the more privileged preload context. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further system compromise.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update Electron to patched versions (42.10.0, 43.5.0, or 44.0.0-beta.6) immediately.
  • Disable or restrict applications loading untrusted content until updated.
  • Review and audit preload scripts for unauthorized modifications or cache entries.
