Executive Summary

This is a command injection vulnerability in Ziroom ZHOME A0101 1.0.1.0. The set_time_zone function in /api/ZRFirmware/set_time_zone improperly handles the hostname parameter, allowing attackers to inject malicious shell commands. The flaw exists because user input is directly concatenated into a system command without sanitization.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Ziroom ZHOME ZH-A0101 device is running firmware version 1.0.1.0 (Build 202004151405). Verify if the /api/ZRFirmware/set_time_zone endpoint is accessible via HTTP Basic Auth as the root user. Test by sending a POST request with a hostname parameter containing a command injection payload like hostname=RCE;touch /tmp/vuln04.txt and check if the file /tmp/vuln04.txt is created.

Commands to test: curl -X POST -u root:password http://device-ip/api/ZRFirmware/set_time_zone -d 'hostname=RCE;touch /tmp/vuln04.txt' && ls /tmp/vuln04.txt

Impact Analysis

An attacker could execute arbitrary commands on the device with root privileges. This may lead to file creation, reverse shells, persistence mechanisms, or disabling security features like firewalls. Exploitation requires network access and valid root credentials.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware of the Ziroom ZHOME ZH-A0101 device to a patched version if available. If no patch exists, restrict network access to the device by placing it behind a firewall and disabling remote access. Change the root password to a strong, unique value and disable HTTP Basic Auth if possible.
