Description

A vulnerability was detected in Nothings stb up to 2c980bb59875b0d32144a71867fbdebb2f77cd20. The impacted element is the function hexwave_init in the library stb_hexwave.h. Performing a manipulation of the argument width/oversample results in integer overflow. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. The exploit is now public and may be used. The project was informed of the problem early through an issue report but has not responded yet.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the hexwave_init function of the stb_hexwave.h library. It occurs when the width and oversample parameters are manipulated to exceed the maximum 32-bit integer value, causing incorrect buffer size calculations. This leads to heap or stack buffer overflows during data processing.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, compile and run the provided proof-of-concept (PoC) code from Resource 1. Compile with AddressSanitizer using: gcc -fsanitize=address poc_hexwave.c -o poc_hexwave. Execute ./poc_hexwave to check for integer overflow or buffer overflow errors.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause denial-of-service conditions by triggering buffer overflows. Applications using the affected stb library with untrusted input for width and oversample parameters are at risk of crashes or security breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to buffer overflows, potentially allowing unauthorized data access or corruption. For GDPR, this may violate integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it could risk protected health information exposure if exploited in healthcare systems.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately stop using the vulnerable stb_hexwave.h library if your project includes it. Apply input validation to ensure width and oversample parameters are within safe bounds before calling hexwave_init. Monitor the stb project for updates and patches. Consider replacing the library with a secure alternative if no fix is released soon.
