Description

Marmite through 0.4.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the development server started by --serve that allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary files. The handle_request function in src/server.rs fails to reject .. segments after percent-decoding and joining the request path to the output folder, enabling attackers to request encoded traversal sequences to access files readable by the marmite process.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-102810 is a path traversal vulnerability in Marmite's development server (--serve mode) that allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary files. The server fails to properly validate user-supplied paths, enabling encoded traversal sequences (..) to bypass restrictions and access sensitive files outside the intended directory.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Marmite development server (version 0.4.2 or earlier) is running on your system, particularly on port 8000. Use commands like 'netstat -tulnp | grep 8000' or 'ss -tulnp | grep 8000' to identify listening ports. If the server is running without authentication, it may be vulnerable. Additionally, test for path traversal by sending crafted requests with encoded traversal sequences (e.g., %2e%2e%2f) to the server's URL.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to read sensitive files on the system where the Marmite development server is running. This could include configuration files, source code, or other confidential data accessible by the Marmite process. The impact is high due to the lack of authentication requirements.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using affected Marmite versions may face compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately stop using the Marmite development server (--serve mode) if you are running version 0.4.2 or earlier. Upgrade to the latest version where the server binds only to localhost (127.0.0.1:8000) by default. If you must run the server, ensure it is not exposed to untrusted networks and use the --bind flag to restrict access. Avoid using the development server in production environments.
