Uncontrolled Recursion in Gosub Engine via Malicious SVG

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-103087, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-09-30

Last updated on: 2026-09-30

Assigner: MITRE

Description

Uncontrolled recursion in the Gosub browser engine (gosub-engine) through 0.1.0 and main before commit 46868b3 allows a remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service (stack exhaustion and application crash) via an SVG document containing an excessive number of deeply nested elements. Because the engine does not limit the nesting depth of processed SVG nodes, rendering such a document overflows the thread stack and terminates the application. The malicious SVG can be embedded through the SRC attribute of an IMG element, and thus exploitation only requires the victim to visit an attacker-controlled web page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Denial of Service (DoS) issue in the Gosub browser engine caused by uncontrolled recursion. When processing SVG documents with excessive nested elements, the engine does not limit the depth of these elements, leading to stack exhaustion and application crashes. Attackers can embed malicious SVGs via an IMG tag, causing crashes when victims visit a webpage.

Detection Guidance

Monitor for crashes in applications using the Gosub engine when rendering SVG files. Check for stack overflow errors in logs. Use network traffic analysis to detect excessive SVG nesting in web requests.

Impact Analysis

If you visit a website containing a malicious SVG with deeply nested elements, your browser using the Gosub engine may crash. This results in a Denial of Service, disrupting your browsing experience and potentially creating crash dump files. Exploitation requires only visiting an attacker-controlled page.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes Denial of Service (DoS) by crashing the application through stack exhaustion, which may indirectly impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA by disrupting service availability. However, the provided context does not explicitly link this DoS vulnerability to specific compliance violations or data protection requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Gosub engine to version 0.1.0 or later with commit 46868b3. Implement network-level filtering to block SVG files with excessive nesting. Disable SVG rendering in affected applications if updates are not possible.
