CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL injection flaw in OS4ED openSIS-Classic up to version 9.3. It exists in the Student Search component, specifically in the file functions/CustomFieldsFnc.php. The issue allows manipulation of the 'cust' argument, enabling attackers to inject malicious SQL code. The exploit can be launched remotely and a public exploit is available.

Detection Guidance

Check openSIS-Classic logs for unusual SQL queries or errors in functions/CustomFieldsFnc.php. Monitor database queries for time delays or unexpected results during student searches. Use network traffic analysis to detect suspicious input patterns in the cust argument.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the database. This may allow them to steal, modify, or delete sensitive data, including student records. The attack can be performed remotely without requiring high privileges initially.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply input validation to cust argument and custom field titles. Replace direct SQL query concatenation with parameterized queries. Restrict administrative privileges to prevent payload injection. Monitor database for stored malicious payloads in custom_fields.TITLE column.
