Executive Summary

This vulnerability in yii2-starter-kit through version 4.2.0 allows authenticated managers to upload PHP files without proper validation. These files are stored in a web-accessible directory and can be executed to run arbitrary code on the server.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized PHP files in web-accessible storage directories. Inspect backend file upload logs for manager role actions. Review file extensions in storage directories for unexpected PHP files. Use commands like 'find /path/to/storage -name "*.php"' to locate PHP files in storage locations.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with manager privileges can upload malicious PHP scripts to execute arbitrary code on the server. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or further network infiltration depending on server permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution, potentially exposing sensitive data. This may violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules, leading to legal penalties and loss of compliance certifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update yii2-starter-kit to a patched version. Implement strict file type validation for uploads. Restrict PHP file uploads entirely. Review and remove any unauthorized PHP files from storage directories. Disable debug and Gii modules in production environments.
