Description

The Asset CleanUp: Page Speed Booster plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Server-Side Request Forgery in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.0.5 via the 'page_url' parameter. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level access and above, to make web requests to arbitrary locations originating from the web application and can be used to query and modify information from internal services. This vulnerability is only reachable when the plugin's dom_get_type setting has been configured to 'wp_remote_post' by an administrator.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the Asset CleanUp: Page Speed Booster WordPress plugin affecting versions up to 1.4.0.5. It allows authenticated attackers with administrator access to make arbitrary web requests from the server by exploiting the 'page_url' parameter. The attack is possible only if the plugin's dom_get_type setting is set to 'wp_remote_post'.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Asset CleanUp: Page Speed Booster plugin is installed and verify its version. If it is version 1.4.0.5 or lower, it is vulnerable. Additionally, inspect server logs for unusual outbound requests originating from the web application, especially those targeting internal services.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access internal services, query sensitive data, or modify information from within your network. Since it requires administrator access, the primary risk is for sites where an attacker has already gained admin privileges or where admin accounts are compromised.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, which may violate GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements depending on the compromised data. Organizations must ensure such vulnerabilities are patched to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Asset CleanUp: Page Speed Booster plugin to the latest version. If an update is not available, consider disabling or removing the plugin. Ensure the dom_get_type setting is not configured to 'wp_remote_post' to reduce attack surface. Review and restrict administrator-level access to only necessary users.
