Executive Summary

This is an OS Command Injection vulnerability where a backup file that has been maliciously modified could execute Linux operating system commands when restored. This happens due to improper neutralization of special elements used in OS commands.

Detection Guidance

Detecting OS command injection vulnerabilities typically involves inspecting system logs for unusual command execution during backup restoration. Check backup files for suspicious scripts or commands before restoring. Monitor network traffic for unexpected outbound connections initiated by backup processes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain control over the system by executing arbitrary Linux commands during the backup restoration process. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in non-compliance due to potential data breaches and lack of proper access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately stop using untrusted backup files. Verify the integrity of all backup files before restoration. Implement strict access controls for backup files and processes. Update backup software to the latest patched version if available.
