Executive Summary

This is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in OriginLab Origin Viewer that allows remote code execution. The flaw occurs during the parsing of OGWU files due to insufficient validation of user-supplied data, which can lead to writing past allocated memory structures. Exploitation requires user interaction, such as visiting a malicious page or opening a malicious file.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the version of OriginLab Origin Viewer installed on your system. If the version is prior to 10.4.0.25, the system is vulnerable. No specific commands are provided in the context, but monitoring for suspicious OGWU file processing or unusual memory writes may indicate exploitation attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on your system with the same privileges as the current user. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration. The impact includes high risks to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations affected by this flaw may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update OriginLab Origin Viewer to version 10.4.0.25 or later immediately. Avoid opening OGWU files from untrusted sources and disable automatic file opening from web sources. Monitor system behavior for signs of compromise.
