SQL Injection in WP Crowdfunding WordPress Plugin

Description

The WP Crowdfunding plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via 'wpneo_reward' Post Meta in all versions up to, and including, 2.2.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with shop manager-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This is a second-order injection: a Shop Manager writes the malicious payload once via the WooCommerce REST products endpoint (POST/PUT /wp-json/wc/v3/products/{id}), and the injected query executes on every subsequent public page view that renders the campaign rewards sidebar.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The WP Crowdfunding plugin for WordPress has a SQL Injection vulnerability in versions up to 2.2.1. It occurs due to insufficient escaping of user input in the 'wpneo_reward' Post Meta field and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Authenticated attackers with shop manager-level access or higher can inject malicious SQL queries via the WooCommerce REST products endpoint. These queries execute when public pages render the campaign rewards sidebar, allowing data extraction from the database.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the WP Crowdfunding plugin version up to 2.2.1 and monitoring for suspicious SQL queries or unauthorized database access. Review server logs for unusual POST/PUT requests to /wp-json/wc/v3/products/{id} with malicious payloads in the wpneo_reward parameter. Use tools like grep to search for plugin files or database entries related to this parameter.

Impact Analysis

If you use the affected WP Crowdfunding plugin, attackers with shop manager access could steal sensitive database information. This includes user data, financial details, or other confidential information stored in the WordPress database. The attack requires initial authenticated access but can be automated to extract data silently over time.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if sensitive data is exposed through this SQL injection flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Crowdfunding plugin to the latest version beyond 2.2.1. Restrict access to the WooCommerce REST products endpoint to trusted users only. Review and audit database access logs for unauthorized queries. Consider temporarily disabling the plugin if an update is not immediately available.
