Description

DB-GPT v0.7.5 and v0.8.0 contains directory traversal in python_file_upload (packages/dbgpt-app/src/dbgpt_app/openapi/api_v1/python_upload_api.py:42). A remote attacker can use the validated exploitation path to write files outside the intended workspace or storage boundary.

Executive Summary

DB-GPT versions 0.7.5 and 0.8.0 have a directory traversal vulnerability in the python_file_upload function located in the file python_upload_api.py. This flaw allows a remote attacker to write files outside the intended workspace or storage directory by exploiting a validated path.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect the python_file_upload function in packages/dbgpt-app/src/dbgpt_app/openapi/api_v1/python_upload_api.py for improper path validation. Check for file upload endpoints in DB-GPT v0.7.5 or v0.8.0 that allow directory traversal. Monitor logs for unusual file writes outside intended directories.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to overwrite critical files, inject malicious code, or gain unauthorized access to sensitive data stored outside the application's intended directory. This may lead to system compromise or data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face legal penalties, loss of trust, and compliance violations due to potential data exposure.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade DB-GPT to a version that patches the directory traversal vulnerability in python_file_upload. If no patch is available, disable the python_file_upload functionality or restrict access to the vulnerable API endpoint.
