Executive Summary

The Kaon AR2140X router has a flaw where its backup function can be accessed without authentication. An attacker can remotely trigger a configuration backup and retrieve it in an encrypted form using a device-specific key. This causes the router to become temporarily inoperable.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, scan your network for Kaon AR2140X routers with firmware versions up to 4.2.17. Check if the backup functionality is accessible without authentication by attempting to trigger a configuration backup remotely.

Impact Analysis

An unauthenticated attacker could exploit this to disable your router, causing network downtime. They could also retrieve encrypted configuration data, potentially leading to further attacks if the encryption is weak or device-specific.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may impact compliance by allowing unauthorized access to network configurations, potentially exposing sensitive data. Organizations must ensure routers are patched to avoid violations of data protection standards like GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the router firmware to the latest version if available. If no update exists, restrict network access to the router by blocking external connections to its administrative interface until a patch is released.
