Integer Overflow in Compress Library

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-63209, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

compress provides various compression algorithms. Prior to version 1.18.7, a signed integer overflow vulnerability in s2.NewDict() allows an attacker to bypass repeat index validation by supplying a dictionary with a uvarint-encoded repeat value exceeding MaxInt64. When Dict.Encode() is subsequently called, the overflowed negative repeat value causes an out-of-bounds memory access via unsafe.Pointer arithmetic, crashing the process with SIGSEGV. This issue has been patched in version 1.18.7.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a signed integer overflow in the s2.NewDict() function of the compress library. It occurs when a dictionary with a uvarint-encoded repeat value exceeding MaxInt64 is provided. The overflowed negative repeat value leads to an out-of-bounds memory access during Dict.Encode(), causing a SIGSEGV crash.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the compress library version 1.18.7 or earlier. To detect it, check the installed version of the compress library using commands like 'go list -m github.com/klauspost/compress' for Go modules or inspect the package version in your dependency files. If the version is <=1.18.6, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can crash applications using the affected compress library version, leading to denial of service. Attackers could exploit it to cause unexpected terminations of services relying on the library.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes denial of service via process crashes (SIGSEGV) due to out-of-bounds memory access. It does not directly lead to data breaches or unauthorized access, which are key concerns for GDPR and HIPAA compliance. However, repeated crashes could disrupt services handling sensitive data, potentially impacting availability requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the compress library to version 1.18.7 or later immediately. For Go projects, run 'go get -u github.com/klauspost/compress@latest' and update your dependency files. For other environments, replace the vulnerable library with the patched version and restart affected services.
