CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a time-based blind SQL injection in the 'pattern' parameter of the search function on the home page of a TMS application. It allows an attacker to manipulate SQL queries by injecting malicious input, potentially leading to unauthorized data access or manipulation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from the database, modify or delete data, or even gain control over the application. This could lead to data breaches, system compromise, or disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access or exposure. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. Exploitation could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately patch the TMS application to the latest version. Disable or restrict access to the search function if a patch is not available. Implement input validation for the 'pattern' parameter to prevent SQL injection. Monitor database queries for unusual patterns indicating exploitation attempts.
