Executive Summary

This is a DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Adobe Experience Manager. An attacker can manipulate the DOM to execute malicious JavaScript in a victim's browser. The victim must visit a specially crafted webpage for exploitation to occur.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this DOM-based XSS vulnerability typically involves manual code review of client-side JavaScript or automated scanning tools that analyze DOM manipulation. Look for unsafe DOM modifications like innerHTML, document.write, or eval() with user-controlled input. Browser developer tools can inspect DOM changes and network requests for suspicious payloads.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to steal sensitive data, such as cookies or session tokens, or perform actions on your behalf if you visit a malicious webpage. It may also enable phishing attacks or defacement of web pages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised due to this issue.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately apply the latest security patches from Adobe for Adobe Experience Manager. Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict inline scripts and external resources. Sanitize all user inputs before rendering them in the DOM using libraries like DOMPurify. Monitor for unusual JavaScript execution patterns in browser consoles.
