Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authenticated path traversal flaw in AOS-CX API endpoints. It allows attackers with valid credentials to write arbitrary files to the underlying operating system, potentially leading to remote code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking API endpoints for path traversal flaws. Monitor logs for unusual file write operations or requests containing sequences like '../' or '..\'. Inspect AOS-CX API responses for errors indicating unauthorized file access. Use network traffic analysis tools to identify suspicious API calls targeting file operations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to write malicious files to the system, enabling remote code execution. This could allow unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise depending on the attacker's goals.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data security) requirements. Compliance may be compromised due to potential exposure of sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply vendor patches or updates for AOS-CX immediately. Restrict API access to trusted users only. Monitor file system changes and unauthorized write attempts. Disable unnecessary API endpoints if possible.
